Flag for Asante Kingdom: The Asantehene sends Emissaries on matters of great importance. A chief may be sent: once, Aduboufuor, Gyaasehene, was sent to patch up some differences which had arisen between Sem (Nsemaa) and Ahanta, and which had been referred to Asantehene. This was successfully done, and this led to the friendship between Ahanta and Nsemaa on one hand and Asante on the other in which people from eitherside could insult those of the other without generating any bitterness.

By eigtheenth century Katsina had become not only a great centre of Islamic Learning in Hausaland, but also a great trade terminus. Visiting Hausaland in 1851, the German Explorer, Heinrich Barth, recorded his impression as follows. 'Katsina during the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries seeks to have been the chief city of...Negroland and as well in commercial and political importance as other aspects.' As could be expected, not all the fourteen states of Hausaland developed the same institutions. However, there were many which were common to most of the states.

Political Organisation: From the start, each Hausa state grew around the original settlement or principal trading centre of the area. As time wore on, many neighbouring smaller settlements came under the control of the ruler in the principal city, which thus became the capital and chief market centre for the area.

(a)Largely because of political and trading rivalries, each principal city was generally, walled for protection against external attacks. Together with the surrounding communities over which it had influence, the principal city became the centre of an independent city state similar to those which existed in ancient Greece,

(b)At the head of the city state was the Sarki, or king, who had under him many subordinate local rulers who were, in some cases, members of the royal family.(SOURCE: West Africa since A.D. 1000: Book One - The People by F.K. Buah [Page 105])
